The Art of Caring: Caring as a Future Nurse Practitioner “Nurses practice the art of caring when they reflect on their practice, not simply focusing on signs and symptoms but on the richer, deeper ... spiritual connections resulting from protecting, enhancing, and preserving a person's health”(Vandenhouten et al., 2012, p.262). Further, Watson adds that "caring science is the essence of nursing and the foundational disciplinary core of the profession" (Watson, 2008, p.17). Being able to first gain your patients trust through respect coupled along with caring is essential to becoming a successful future family nurse practitioner. Stepping outside of the traditional box of nursing into the aspect of art and science as a whole I believe will help me succeed in my future track as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Definition of Caring My personal definition of caring is being able to first off relate to the patients physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs.
