Examine Healthy People 2020 health promotion and disease prevention objectives. Identify a health disparity and research this topic, how is it being addressed at both the local and national level. ... Healthy People 2020 created specific objectives in hopes to increase health promotion and decrease health disparities. One objective that caught my eye in particular is: C-1 Reduce The Overall Cancer Death Rate. According to the data on the Healthy People 2020 website, the baseline population was 179.3 with a 2020 Target of 161.4 deaths per 100,000 of the population. At a national level, the population of overall cancer deaths decreased to 152.5 in 2017, while at a state level, California was down to 136.7 by 2017; which both exceeds the goal rate of 161.4 deaths (Healthy People, 2021). At a national level, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advocates for cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. Overall cancer death rates have decreased 1.5% on average per year, yet specific cancers had significant decreases in death rates such as melanoma or lung cancer (CDC, 2020). It is up to health care providers to increase knowledge of cancer screening for cancer prevention in order to expedite treatment and reduce mortality rates. At my local level, a community-based coalition, the San Francisco Cancer Initiative (SF CAN) was created to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality through evidence-based interventions and policies through task forces of various hospital organizations (Hiatt, Sibley, Fejerman, Glantz, Nguyen, et al., 2018, p. 54). The goal of SF CAN will take a long time to achieve, therefore they must rely on their task forces to increase access to and quality of care while supporting legislation and policy changes pertaining to cancer prevention and early detection with the help of the city government (Hiatt, Sibley, Fejerman, Glantz, Nguyen, et al., 2018, p. 59).
