As you make your rounds, you notice her LPN (who is not certified for IV medication administration) administering a syringe of fluid via an IV line to a patient. (Learning Objectives #6, #8, and #10) a. What data in the scenario are pertinent? LPN is administering fluids into an IV line while the LPN is not certified to do so. The RN who is above this LPN is on lunch not monitoring or giving the proper tasks to their team members. b. Is there a nursing practice violation? If so, what is it? Yes there is a violation. Either the nurse that is on lunch delegated a task to the LPN without bothering to note the LPN was not certified, or the LPN is not realizing they are going out of their scope of nursing practice to get this task performed. c. What regulations and/or standards address these issues? The nursing practice acts clearly states the scope of practice of a nurse and a licensed practical nurse. The acts list the violations and is also inteneded to prevent untrained or unlicensed people from practicing whats not within their scope of practice. The ANA standards of nursing practice shows that the nurse needs to be competent and in this situation the nurse is not being competent on passing the task off on to the LPN who is not certified for this skill. d. How does licensure and certification apply to this case study? Licensure in this case is being mis-used because having a license, you have to go through a process that the state determines a candidate meeting certain requirements to practice in the profession and grants a license to do so. The license is a legal documents that permits a person to off the public skills and knowledge in a particular jurisdiction, where such practice would be unlawful without a license. The nurse who passed off this task is not using their license like they should, and passing off tasks that are not within the scope of practice of the LPN and the LPN is not licensed to practice this task and this such practice is unlawful.
