Does the people management strategy of care and compassion make business sense?
The essence of the business in the society is not just making profit but improving the lives of
people the business is operating in and with. A business indeed requires profit for survival, but it
is not the only target. Shareholders target profit, but stakeholders target something more than
that. Looking at the business beyond the perspective of shareholders makes a lot of sense to me
as a stakeholder of Amazon Inc. In my understanding, the business ought to improve on
performance and staff retention. The management should avoid using fear and greed as
management tools in cutting off costs and unnecessary expenses. Businesses need to be
beneficial to the shareholders and stakeholders for it to make a better business sense.
How does the practice of keeping employees on the edge impact business in the short and longrun?
Short Term
Keeping employees on edge enabled Amazon to realize explosive growth. The fear that is
created in employees induces adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol hormone-induced controls the
brain, motivates the brain, and controls the fear. Adrenaline, on the other hand, prepares the body
for more rapid changes and movements at Amazon's place of work. Economists have nicknamed
these hormones as "flight or fight hormones." The short term boost prepares the body of
employees at Amazon for any situation.
