Neurological Part 1: Prototype Drug Therapeutic Uses Nursing Interventions Adverse/Side Effects Contraindications/ Interactions Education SLEEP DISORDERS -Benzodiazepine Temazepam (Restoril) ... -Relief of insomnia,especiall y when patient experiences multiple awakenings during night. oversee nighttime ambulation,especially for older adults -be aware that severe sedation may be a sign of overdose -monitor patient especially older adults for paradoxical reaction. -monitor patient for signs of dependence and tolerance -monitor patients breathing function for respiratory depression -may need to give flumazenil (romazicon) for overdose -taper benzodiazepines gradually to prevent withdrawal. -Drowsiness, dizziness -paradoxical reaction, especially in older adults (confusion, anxiety) - tolerance, physical dependence - severe respiratory or CNS depression or overdose -withdrawal symptoms following use over several weeks -pregnancy category X, lactation - glaucoma -children under 18 years -teach patient to take temazepam about 30 minutes before bedtime and ensure that 8 hours are available for sleep -instruct patient not to take temazepam with alcohol or other depressants -instruct patients to stop taking drug and notify provider if this reaction occurs -teach patients that tolerance to benzodiazepines occurs with time - instruct patient to take these drugs as needed and for short term use only - instruct patient to take medication as prescribed - call physician if underlying depression is not being controlled and patient is having thoughts of suicide. -instruct patient to taper the drug slowly [Show More]
