NR532 Week 4 Licensure and Accreditation
The number of malpractice claims involving patient safety issues at your facility has
doubled in the last quarter. Discuss a strategic plan to reduce the number of these claims.
Be specific with your example and explanation. Based upon the person-centred nursing
framework by McCormack and McCance (2017), how would presenting assist in this
process?
Professor and Class,
Vaismoradi et al. (2020) provide the World Health Organization's 2019 definition of
patient safety as the absence of preventable harm to patients and preventing unnecessary harm by
healthcare professionals. As the nurse leader of an outpatient surgery center, there has been an
unusual increase in malpractice claims involving patient safety. The priority is to get the risk
management team involved as soon as possible. Risk management is responsible for
investigating the facts surrounding the allegations and assisting in mitigation. Next is to follow
up with the professional who provided care for the patients—asking the professional for a
detailed statement of what occurred from their perspective while caring for the patients. Then a
team is put to develop a strategic plan.
Our reading from Roussel et al. (2015) and Langley et al. (2019), for this week, teaches
us that we should not only identify a problem but must develop a plan to correct the concern. In
healthcare, it is vital to use a method to aid in necessary steps to fix an issue. The best way for
fixing this issue is by using a theoretical framework developed by W. Edwards Deming is the
Model for Improvement Framework (MFI), and Walter Shewhart's, plan-do-study-act PDSA.
The MFI and PDSA is a valuable tool that provides structure for asking the appropriate questions
and testing the interventions to correct the change process. MFI is a three-step process that
involves asking questions that target you to the problem: what are we trying to accomplish? How
will we know a change is an improvement? And what changes can we make that will result in an
improvement? PDSA is a rapid-cycle process to develop interventions for change and then test
and evaluate their efficacy.
With this scenario as a nurse leader of an outpatient surgery facility, it is essential to
include all team members in the change process development. In McCormack and McCance
(2017) person-centred practice framework, leaders must know how to use and develop strategic
frameworks and strategic leadership. The PCP framework involves building strong and healthy
relationships with your direct reports and colleagues by using interprofessional and
intraprofessional relationships and collaboration. Having these skills helps make your team
strong and builds trust by including them in all
