REPATRIATION IN MULTINATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

Document Content and Description Below

The repatriation of employee is a challenge to most organisations because of the culture changes in the different countries. Culture is used to describe the shared values which determine the modus ope ... randi of a group of people (Dowling, Festing & Engle 2009, p. 12). Each country possesses particular challenges meaning the repatriation strategies adopted by a multinational organisation have an impact on the achievement of the goals. As a result, organisations have faced the dilemma on global integration of their employees as they seek to give their employees the best environment to achieve set goals. Standard Finish Oil has a policy of expatriation which ensures that there is little culture interference on the individual and their family. However, their operations in Colombia demanded that Johanna Korhonen had to be issued a five year term as she was supposed to train and guide the new employees. This term was different from the company policy which ensured that expatriates could never be away for more than two years. The expatriates could also visit home on a regular basis during the work term meaning that they would stay updated on changes at home. Culture change in the country means that Johanna and her family would be exposed to a new culture for an extended duration unlike the situation for other expatriate. The other countries where the company had operations are developed economies meaning that she experienced a relatively new environment because Colombia is an emerging economy. The work ethics and conditions of employment in the two economic spheres are huge meaning Johanna experienced a huge change in economic and cultural variation. The huge change in culture is revealed when she finds that adjusting to life back in Finland is challenging because of the high cost of living compared with that of Colombia. [Show More]
