The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) put into effect the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). ICANN developed the policy as there was a need to have an eff... icient and effective way of name dispute resolution different from eResolution which existed till Dec 2001. Over the years existence of the URDP has received mixed review but their panels have helped solve 32, 324 disputes as at 2015. Proponents feel that it has helped in effectively addressing the problems which existed before its formulation and the limitations of CPR system which ceased handling disputes in 2007. Before URDP came into effect, claimants could not effectively get relief for their claims regardless of how good their case was or the amount they were willing to spend. However, the system led to increase in the number of frozen domain names and any claim had to go through litigation subjecting both parties to increased costs. URDP was developed to overcome to provide relief from the procedural costs, burdens and idiosyncrasies which impede access to justice that existed in the previous method of resolution. URDP is independent of the courts system which means it provides a simple procedural system that avoids the timely and costly system of dispute resolution. Therefore, ICANNs UDRP is a perfect global domain name dispute resolution mechanism despite the challenges and criticisms which it has received.
