NR 351 Week 1 Graded Discussion: Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies I believe the competencies listed in the Nurse of the Future Core Competencies were chosen because they should be ... the foundation of knowledge that all nurses strive to base their practice on. Each of the competencies are directly correlated with each other and are vital to the continuous improvements being made in healthcare. The first competency that has been and will continue to be crucial in my nursing practice is patient- centered care. The basis of nursing is the care that we provide to our patients. “Patient-centered care is a quality of personal, professional, and organizational relationships. Thus, efforts to promote patient- centered care should consider patient-centeredness of patients (and their families), clinicians, and health systems.” * It is easier to place blame on others rather than acknowledge there is a problem and come to a conclusion on how to work through the problem together. It is the responsibility of each member of the healthcare team to contribute to the patient-centered care practice. As a nurse that has experience on a medical surgical unit with high patient to nurse ratios, I know first-hand how easy it is to get caught up in the same routine every day at work. I go into a patient’s room, give them their medication and leave as quickly as possible because I am on a strict time schedule for giving my long list of medicines to all of my patients on time. As nurses, I feel as though sometimes we lose focus on the reason we are in this profession, our patients. Quality improvement is crucial to the healthcare field. If nurses continued to practice the same way year after year can you imagine where our healthcare system would be? “Advancing the education of all nurses is increasingly recognized as essential to the future of nursing practice.”** Whether it be through continuing education classes or obtaining higher levels of education, improvement is essential in caring for our patients. All of the competencies are intertwined and are vital to improving the quality of care that we give our patients. We all must be willing to learn and change for the betterment of our patient care. In closing, the competencies listed in the Nurse of the Future Core Competencies are only the foundation of knowledge for a nurse. We should all continue to build on that foundation to become the greatest healthcare providers and educators we can be for our patients. * https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3056855/ ** < http://www.mass.edu/nahi/documents/NOFRNCompetencies_updated_March2016.pdf > This study source was downloaded by 100000829957125 from CourseHero.com on 09-08-2021 22:07:25 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/20286036/Week-1-discussion/ [Show More]
