PSYC 290N Week 1 Discussion Topic 2 A huge amount of research has been done about pregnancy & what pregnant women should & should not do to have a healthy baby. We know that many doctors & parents ar... e concerned with the biological factors, as well as the environmental effects. Pick one of these issues, & explain what considerations should be taken when making decisions on having a healthy baby. Answer: There is a lot of planning & decisions that go into planning for a baby let alone deciding if you are ready for a baby. Babies are very a lot of work & require a tremendous amount of energy because of all the care they need from others. They are not able to do the care themselves so they require us to do it for them. We are able to do this stuff but there are some things that we might not be able to control like biological factors. A biological factor as stated by Nugent (2013) as a living organism has something that is affecting the individual either "physical, physiological, chemical, neurological, or genetic condition that causes a psychological effect". These factors can be passed on from mother to baby, or because of the conditions of the mother or the wrong linking of certain things during development. Many of these things as an adult we can either prevent or lessen by changing something, getting surgery, or taking a substance. This gives the baby a better chance at a healthy life which it can live better. Biological factors also include our genotypes & phenotypes that make up our genes & physical characteristics. These are factors that we can not control because they are based on the mother & father’s genes. The genes are a combination of the mothers & fathers that are determined by how the two parts link together ( Boyd & Bee, p.51). These are what make each of us our own individuals & make us different from one another in the way we look & how we are made up. Like I stated before there can be things done for the mother if there are complications that are going on during the pregnancy. But what happens if you are in a different culture that does not involve measures to help "fix" the biological factors that the fetus may have? In different place across the world & even in the country people have different backgrounds that shape their views on how certain things should be done. Because of these certain beliefs, biological factors could be left untreated causing risks to the fetus & the mother which could result in death or permanent damage (Duarte, 2015). In some cases, these can be prevented if access to care is available to the mother but in other cases, the people do not accept this care. If it is not accepted because of the culture there is nothing that can be done but to let the mother be a mother to her child. It can be sad because complications may rise but the culture may have different ways of curing different problems so we can only be there for support [Show More]
