#MeToo; A Movement Against Sexual Harassment and Assault
MeToo movement (#MeToo) was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke to help people who
suffered from sexual harassment and sexual assaults, particularly Black women and girls, and
other young women from different color and minority communities. This campaign has been
helping them to find pathways to healing. Even though this campaign has been there from 2006,
recently (2017 October to be specific) because of #metoo hashtag, it has become one of the most
viral hashtag of the time. It has caught the attention globally and people have been responding to
it. The main purpose of this hashtag campaign is to encourage women to speak up about sexual
harassment and assaults they had to encounter in different aspects of their life such as home,
work and other places. It has given the women the support and courage they needed to stand up
for what’s right and react when they are being treated wrongfully. News and reports are made
daily regarding abusiveness against women on a daily basis but the outcome of those incidents
are most of the time unknown. Medias and Newspaper wont stick to a incident if they become
less interesting or outdated and which is why social media hashtag campaigns have become one
of the most effective way to show the world what happened and with the support of people the
chances of getting justice is high. The concept is simple any women who have been sexually
harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as reply to tweet. The viral hashtag has been founded by
Alyssa Milano and it has been supported by celebrities like Lady Gaga and she also tweeted ‘me
too’ meaning she has also been experienced these assaults and is ready to speak up.
