Introduction
The St. Albans Issue
The problem in the city of St. Albans.
The unionized police force has claimed that during
the past 10 years, they have received minimal cost of
living increases that do not reflect what other police
department across the states have received.
The St. Albans Police department is a community
oriented full-service department which provides:
administrative, patrol, investigative, crime
prevention, dispatching and emergency management
service. (The Official Website of the City of Saint
Albans, Vermont, 2016)
However, the police officers' salaries have remained
unchanged.
This leaves St. Albans Police department behind in
term of wages..
Why Give The Raise?
Since the city is home to two college university the St.
Albans Police Department plays a crucial role in ensuring
that peace and stability is within the city of St. Albans.
These officers put their lives on the line everyday to protect
and serve the St. Albans citizens and the value of their
public service should be reflected in a decent salary.
Its important to note that police officers protect our
property, homes and families to the point of sacrificing their
very own lives.
How many people can say they do that for a living?
What Statistics Say....
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
a Police officer is paid a salary between
$33,000 to $96,000 as of August 2016. With
the average salary for a police officer being
$48,000 per year nationwide.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics,
New police recruits earn an annual salary of
$49,500, which is above the national
average.
This is a great injustice, it is simply unfair
that St. Albans Police officers are paid below
the national level.
