- The adverse effects of Acyclovir include phlebitis and inflammation at the site of
infusion, nephrotoxicity, gingival hyperplasia.
- Monitoring for acetaminophen toxicity includes assessing for early
manifestations of liver damage such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, and
abdominal discomfort. This then progress to hepatic failure, coma, and death. The
antidote for acetaminophen is acetylcysteine.
- A potential complication for non-opioid analgesics is impaired kidney function
by decreasing urine output, weight gain from fluid retention, increased BUN and
creatinine levels. Use cautiously with older adults and clients who have heart
failure. Monitor I&Os and kidney function (BUN and Creatinine).
- Hyperglycemia and glycosuria are complications from prednisone therapy.
Patients who have diabetes should have their blood glucose monitored and they
may need an increase in insulin doses.
