Elements Descriptors Physical Environment Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. ● Boundaries What defines the boundaries? Roads, water, railroads. Is the area known for a particular name? What area is this community located in? This neighborhood exists around George H W Bush Elementary school. The Boundaries are roads named Wadley, Whittle Way, Sunshine Parkway, and Loop 250. This area is not named. This neighborhood is in the Northwest part of Midland, TX. ● Housing and Zoning What is the age of the houses? Describe type of construction material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single family housing? Multi-family housing? The houses in this area were built in the mid 1980’s. They are brick single family homes. There also is an apartment building in this neighborhood that STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF COMMUNITY HEALTH PROBLEM 4 was built in 2014. The homes are not immaculate. There is a need for some to be painted but for the most part this area is well taken care of. The yards are all cut and maintained. ● Common Meeting Places Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day? The people in this neighborhood were outside in their garages. There were children playing on the school playground. Women were walking in exercise clothes around the school campus. Kids were playing baseball on the school campus. There were only two bicycle riders. This was on a Saturday at about 2:00 pm. ● Indicators of Growth or Decline Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti? This is a thriving community. It looks well kept up. There are duplexes on either side of the elementary school. Out of 25 duplexes only one needed a new paint job. The roads needed attention. There are multiple cracks in the roads that were treated with tar. There were no new construction sites noted. The area was well-kept with no evidence of graffiti or trash noted. ● Employment Opportunities What places for employment are there is this area? Name the businesses and industries in this area. There are many places for employment in this area. A strip mall facing the loop has Ashley Furniture, Rooms to Go, Kohl’s, Natural Grocers. The restaurants are Cracker Barrel, Jack in the Box, Buffalo Wild Wings, TCBY Yogurt. There is a dentist office, a Kent Kwik convenience store, a Member’s Financial Federal Credit Union, and a small oil company named Tarpon and Pipe Supply. ● Transportation How to people get from one place to another? There is public transportation with 2 stops in this neighborhood. During this assessment measuring the time of the public transport was not assessed. People Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. ● Race and Ethnicity What is the majority racial group represented? What is the majority ethnic group represented? Describe the distribution of gender, approximate ages, single families, multiple families, generational families? The racial group represented was about half Caucasian and half Latino. There were no Black people noted. Ethnicity was American. There were approximately more male children than female. Adults watching the children at the school park were predominantly female. 3 to 4 males were observed working in their garages. Adults were approximately in their 30’s and the children were less than 10 yea
