The model study animal under study is the coyote (Canis latrans). The study looks to estimate the energy demand for the animal over a period of one year. An animal like the C. latrans has a requiremen ... t for a large quantity of prey to help them survive (Young et al 9). Such free-ranging animals spend a lot of energy while hunting for prey. The estimates of the Field Metabolic Rate (FMR) from previous studies ranged from 1508 to 2596 kcal/day for 15–16 kg animals. Researchers did the studies in the winter to gauge the FMR needs of coyotes in east North America. The studies conducted before were on captive and not free ranging coyotes. The current study is to estimate the daily and annual FMR for adult male and female coyotes for a whole year. The researchers then used the estimates they registered to extrapolate the daily and annual prey needs of the coyotes. [Show More]
