BACKGROUND ON A NATIONAL LEVEL… 56% of American adults with mental illness did not receive treatment (MHA, 2018) 50% of psychiatric illnesses begin by age 14 and 75% begin by age 24 (NAMI, 2019) 90% of people who die by suicide had shown symptoms of a mental health condition (NAMI, 2019) 9.6 million Americans experience suicidal ideations (MHA, 2018) Over 65% of pediatricians reported they lacked mental and behavioral health knowledge and skills (NAMI, 2019) 111 million Americans live in mental health professional shortage areas (MHA, 2018) BACKGROUND IN VIRGINIA… Virginia ranks 42nd in the country overall for mental health workforce availability (MHA, 2018) Ratio of patients to a mental health provider 730 : 1 Ratio of patients to a psychiatrist 30,000 : 1 Of the children in Virginia diagnosed with a serious mental illness, approximately 63% or 48,000 did not receive mental health service (MHA, 2018) Approximately 300,000 adults live with mental health and substance abuse disorders (NAMI, 2019) 13.4% of deaths in Virginia werecausedbysuicide(CDC LANDSCAPE WHO ARE THE KEY STAKEHOLDERS?
