How has the American Society been impacted by the progressive movement era? The Progressive movement era impacted the American society from the 1890’s to the 1920’s because this was a time where there was a lot of social activism and political reform to make the American society better. The main problems of the progressive era were caused by industrialization, urbanization, immigration and political corruption and this is why the U.S. needed a change and started making improvements. The improvements that they made were prohibition, rise of professionalism, conservation, greater democracy and the regulation of businesses. When the started to add reform in the form of social and political views it allowed people to have a better life and have a better government during this era and years to come. Two presidents played a big role in the regulation of business, the two presidents were T. Roosevelt and W.H. Taft, they destroyed bonds, trusts, and the monopolies that were surrounding these businesses. The Sherman Act played a big role in destroying these companies, Roosevelt sued 45 and Taft sued 75 using this act. This act was put in place to ban the confinement of different businesses competing with one another. Many large businesses were working along side each other causing an flocculation of prices, shares, the amount of product that was manufactured and through the works of trust and hidden money. An example that comes to mind is when H. Ford started his automobile company and it was the only one in existence at that time. This gave Ford the freedom to put any price on the automobile because there was no other manufacturers that made an automobile. This allowed people to by a car without the worries of being charged too much. With the regulation of business this allowed people to not worry about prices and allowed an equal playing field for companies. Many people with an authorities went out to the American people to hear their voices so that they could form the 17th amendment. This amendment spoke on behalf of the citizens of the U.S. that may only be represented by a representative that was voted in by the people (McEvoy, 2002). They believed that voting gave people power and make our country different than many others because the people voted for who they want to represent them. To have this right people but abide by the rules and laws of the land or else they will be revoked this amendment. This system of voting worked because it allowed the people of Americas voice to be heard by making laws and allowing their problems to be heard. During this era there was a lot of improvements to help the people because we are a “we the people” nation. Some improvements included better health care, voting and SS numbers. As this movement was going along it played a big role to manage major reforms in the era. As cities began to expand and grow by industrializing and branching off this didn’t allow the people of American to protect mother nature and it beauty as well as the health of humans (Stradling, 2015). To make the environment better former president T. Roosevelt stopped the use of land materials because they were destroying the earth. The American Antiquities Act of 1906 started 51 bird reserves, 150 national forests, and the start of many more park. The American Antiquities Act helped stop and end trash being dumped any where. Some of these jobs and professions where in the medical field, working with kids and becoming a social worker and becoming a special education teacher. But with the rise of these professions there are always ups and downs. The big issue was who could and could not join those professions. This then resulted with criteria and standards these people needed to meet in order to become this profession as well as have the proper qualifications to stay professional (Duchan, 2011). An example would be that the qualifications to become a special education teacher was that teachers in public schools special education branch would need to educate these “backward children” but were trained as regular teachers, with small workshops that would not help them improve the quality of education (Duchan, 2011). For the most part professional standards and criteria had four main parts: 1. have a sense of your profession and its jurisdiction, 2. find out the characteristics for this profession for you to succeed, 3. Find ways to get a monopoly over activities and 4. have some sort of science program to expand your knowledge for a strong foundation to be an expert (Duchan, 20011). So if there was no rise in professionalism we would not have jobs like doctors and stick to low paying jobs like agriculture and factory work because we did not expand to see where these professions would take us. Prohibition was a political and social issue that occurred during the Progressive era Many people who supported the movement was people who operated to stop sale of alcohol all over the nation (The Temperance Movement, 2013). People and groups argued that alcohol was the root of the problem because it was causing conflict within social issues. These social issues were child abuse, unemployment, and spousal abuse. Later on as this was developing the 18th amendment was added to the constitution but it was later on removed because of some consequences. The consequences was then involving a big population of criminal groups and big political police corruption (The Temperance Movement, 2013). The government was able to notice that they could not promote a ban on alcohol because it lacked enforcement by the government. [Show More]
