This virus was first discovered in Congo in 1976 near the Ebola River ("What is Ebola Virus Disease?", 2019). Symptoms of Ebola are similar to that of the flu. According to the CDC the symptoms may start to appear anywhere from 2-21 days after being infected. Symptoms include, fever, body aches, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pains, and unexplained hemorrhage ("Signs and Symptoms", 2019). Ebola is spread through contact with body fluids. The initial transmission is believed to come from human contact with an animal, such as a bat or primate, that is infected. Body fluids can be on sheets, or medical equipment, or can also be spread through direct contact with the body fluids from the infected person. This can be anything from someone being sneezed on to get the person’s blood on you when trying to help them. It can also be transmitted through semen of a man that is sick or who has even survived the virus ("Transmission", 2019). Treatment at the beginning of the virus's detection is fairly simple. They treat the symptoms as they appear in the patient. Fluids are given IV, oxygen if they are having trouble breathing, giving medications to fix the nausea and vomiting and helping them to maintain their blood pressure. They also treat other infections if they begin to occur. Currently there are no antiviral drugs that are approved by the FDA to treat Ebola (“Treatment”, 2019). The outbreaks of Ebola have all began in Africa. The parts of Africa that have had outbreaks mainly include, The Republic of Congo, Uganda, and South Africa ("Ebola Virus Disease Distribution Map: Cases of Ebola Virus Disease in Africa Since 1976 Error processing SSI file", 2019). Currently there is an ongoing outbreak in The Republic of Congo. This current outbreak is its 10th outbreak since Ebola was discovered there in 1976. The mortality rate for 2 This study source was downloaded by 100000831988016 from CourseHero.com on 04-30-2022 15:30:10 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/53255684/EpidemiologyEboladocx/ EPIDEMIOLOGY: EBOLA Ebola is very high with it ranging from 25 percent to 90 percent. Death from Ebola typically occurs from the shock of fluid loss ("Ebola Virus", 2019). The morbidity rate of Ebola is at 50 percent. During the 2014-2018 outbreak, the largest to date, there were over 28,000 confirmed cases and over 11,000 deaths from the virus ("Ebola virus infection", 2019). Social Determinates of Health “Social determinants of health (SDOH) are conditions contributing or hindering a person’s well-being” (Green, 2019) SDOH can be anything from where you live, where you were born, your socioeconomic status, education, and health care (Green, 2019). In an article published by Healthy People 2020, they discuss the SDOH and some broad examples of what they are. One of the examples listed is social norms and attitudes. In the case of Ebola in Africa, [Show More]
