BENCHMARK-POLICY BRIEF
Benchmark-Policy Brief
Air pollution is one of today’s biggest topics of controversy, and how it effects the
environment today. The average life expectancy today has risen to 78 years old in the United
States of America. However, those with chronic diseases may influence this life expectancy. The
population in Bronx, New York, has been said that smog and air pollution has been an issue that
lead to chronic diseases, such as asthma. Focusing on air pollution in the Bronx will reduce many
aspects such as the possibility of deaths and hospitalizations from these illnesses like asthma.
Enforcing and bettering procedures to lessen air pollution is important for those who are living
with lunch illnesses.
Asthma in the Bronx
Asthma is a chronic disease that swells up your airway to your lungs and could possibly
lead to inflammations ("What Is Asthma?," n.d.). Swelling or inflammation of the airways in
lunch cause irritate someone who has asthma and affect one to eventually wheeze, shortness of
breath and a heavy cough. Components that lead to these causes are chemicals through the air,
cold weather, environment changes, and dust. Asthma is a huge issue for the Bronx community,
and it’s a shame. The location of the Bronx being in the perimeter of New York , New York
plays a role in the high rates of asthma. New York city is known for its industrial facilities, which
studies have shown play a huge effect in the quality of air due to the heavy traffic and building
polluting fumes. There is a clear correlation with industrial areas and the high risk of asthma
rates , as well as cases that were so severe that required hospitalization. The research also
conveyed that the high populated city , have a high chance of having diesel vehicles which
contribute to the high rates of asthma ("Promoting and protecting the cities health," n.d.).

BENCHMARK-POLICY BRIEF
The department of health in New York established that children are experiencing asthma
at a much younger age in the Bronx and Manhattan area, over 8% of the children are suffering
from asthma ("Promoting and protecting the cities health," n.d.). The hospitalization rates are an
all time high in the city of Bronx, 70% of those who are diagnosed with asthma end up being in
the hospital. In addition to being hospitalized, there are 6 cases of deaths per 10,000 people,
which is at an all-time high as well ("Promoting and protecting the cities health," n.d.).
