Linguistics > ESSAY > Gender Roles/Differences in Euripides’ Medea (All)
Analysing history, gender roles of men and women differed to some degree, with each being clearly defined. For instance, in societies such as ancient Greece, men had the upper hand while women were su ... pposed to be submissive with roles such as looking for children. Women who acted contrary to societal expectations were described as troublesome symbols. On the other hand, men were expected to be controlling and strong. Euripides, the author of "Medea", takes the audience through the expectations of ancient Greece through the lens of a female character Medea who is depicted as a negative woman for living against society's expectations. She is described as jealous, capable of anything and revengeful mostly assuming roles thought to be for males. In this work, we seek to analyse the concept of change in gender roles/differences through a re-write of Medea by Christa Wolf and Ayala H. Gabriel’s work on ‘living with Medea and Thinking after Freud’. Gender roles, according to the texts, have continually changed in contemporary society, with women assuming roles which were pre-assumed to be for men and vice versa though facing a lot of resistance.
