Introduction Since the creation of the universe, commemoration has utterly become common. It has increasingly become rooted as a common practice in nations and individuals all over the universe. The... re have been many forms of commemorations, but new techniques have also been pioneered mainly to remember loved ones and different memories. Today other methods of remembrance have expanded to an extent never imagined. Monuments come in various dimensions, from a collective of memories to physical monuments, all meant to remind people of past experiences. The practice is also important to new generations who happen to learn through the lens of survivors. In this paper, we seek to discuss the role of monuments through the lens of the novel Un secret by Phillipe Grimbert (Grimbert, 2004). The term collective memory describes the incidents the author discovers, ranging from his parents' past, his imaginative elder brother, and the second world war. Characters in the novel, such as his father, happen to be survivors of the past, and it's through him, he learns about many things, such as the war in Paris. At the age of 15, Grimbert started to learn many secrets about his family, from having a brother to their death in a camp at Nazi. Through commemoration, he writes a novel about all this. As seen in the story, monuments and memories are spontaneous and are meant to convey messages about individuals and events. [Show More]
