NR-536 Week 7 Discussion Question: Collaboration Café (GRADED A)

Document Content and Description Below

NR-536 Week 7 Discussion Question: Collaboration Café Think of a time in which you encountered a challenging change process (personal or professional) and answer the following questions/prom ... pts: • Was the change planned or unplanned? • List the elements that made this change difficulty. • Who were the people involved, and what were their attitudes toward the change? • What were some lessons learned by you during the change process? Dear Class, I am currently going through a challenging change process as we speak. I am in the process of transitioning from full-time OR nursing to travel nursing in addition to being in school. I have recently just accepted a job offer in New York City last Thursday and I am expected to move this Monday. This is both a huge personal and professional change. Although this change was planned, the timeframe was not consistent with the original plan. I had to find someone to take over my lease. My license to practice in the state of New York was then delayed for 2 months and I was forced to stay in an extended stay hotel for a month. When proposed with a job offer, I was only able to give my current job a one-week notice. This was a very difficult decision. I wanted to give my current job as much notice as possible. Both my manager and coworkers were taken back and left short-staffed right before the holidays. Ultimately, I decided it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Initially, the people I worked with were surprised but happy and supportive later. Although many knew of my plans to relocate, I should have had a formal talk with my manager of the situation I was in so that it was not surprising when I was not able to give proper notice. Nursing is more than a job, it is a profession and career choice so it is important to think of ones career as a whole when faced with challenging circumstances. Taylor Hall Dear Lindsey, Healthcare professionals continuously make sacrifices to accommodate hospital staffing needs. These sacrifices include giving up weekends, holidays, and nights with family and friends in order to care for patients. I have worked in an institution where self-scheduling was utilized to try and provide a better work life-balance for employees working complicated hours. However, the self-schedule had to be approved by management and if not approved, management would switch requests in order to meet the unit staffing needs. This system is good in theory, but complicated when management has pre-existing, person relationships with employees. Often, nurses would receive favoritism over other nurses. Eventually I ended up quitting because my requests were never honored, and my work-life balance was constantly compromised. I understand your frustration with management and poor execution of scheduling, especially when it impacts work-life balance. Taylor Hall Dear Theresa, Clear communication between all disciplines is essential in ensuring patient satisfaction. There is importance in remaining clear and unbiased while remaining empathetic with the delivery of difficult new to our patients. In your situation, it seems the physician did not clearly communicate to the patient the most important piece of the puzzle. Change like a new diagnosis is already overwhelming for patients, but to hear the news initially for the first time along with education information is very overwhelming and a lot to process at once. It is important to have every member of the interdisciplinary team involved and up to date on care planning for each patient. Taylor Hall [Show More]
