People of Turkey thought that Istanbul deserved a unique marathon due to the city’s history and geography. The organisers had to work out a route plan to prevent problems of local traffic before inviting the selected Turkish athletes to the event. In October 1979, the Bosphorus Bridge witnessed a marathon for the first time in its history. The most important feature of the Istanbul Marathon is that it aims to spread the message of friendship and peace. It is the only course in the world where the marathon includes two continents in one race. Only professional athletes are allowed to run over the bridge as the crowd caused dangerous instability of the bridge in 2013. In order to register for the event, participants must be at least eighteen years old on the day of the race. In addition to the marathon, there are ten and fifteen kilometre races as well as a non-competitive fun run for the public. There is a range of categories to ensure that everyone is included. The marathon starts on the Asian side of the city, near the first Bosphorus Bridge. Runners cross the bridge while enjoying the spectacular view of Istanbul and finish the race at the Blue Mosque. People from all over the world take part in this marathon and enjoy visiting Istanbul. Would you like to join the fun next year?
