If there are millions of red cells and thousands of white cell/ml of peripheral blood, why is the M:E ratio in the bone marrow 3:1 in favor of myeloid cells? Answer & Explanation Solved by verified ... expert The ratio which involves myeloid to erythroid precursors in the bone marrow is represented by M: E ratio. An increased ratio is observed in the case of infection. Step-by-step explanation After the cell count of bone marrow is completed and recorded, the M (myeloid): E (erythroid) ratio is assessed. This is found by calculating the total number of myeloid precursor cells in comparison to the total number of erythroid precursor cells. In this procedure, the total WBC or white blood cell count is not used; the myeloid cells alone are counted, excluding monocytes, lymphocytes, macrophages, megakaryocytes, plasma cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and other forms of nonmyeloid cells. In most of the cases, it is easy to determine the ratio by simply dividing the myeloid cell total by the erythroid cell total. This is always normally around 3:1 (reference range= 2:1 to 4:1). In some cases where the value of erythroid cells is enhanced, or the myeloid cells are decreased, the M: E ratio is reversed. An easy way to perform the calculation is to always divide the larger value by the smaller. For example: Myeloid total 120: Erythroid total of 40 M: E ratio = 120 ÷ 40 = 3 or 3:1 So, the M: E ratio is 3:1.Another example: Myeloid total 30: Erythroid total of 150 Divide the larger number by the smaller (notice that the placement is reversed). 150 ÷ 30 = 5 [Show More]
