Breast cancer and health of the older adult populationTypes and pathophysiology of breast cancer Breast cancer is a pervasive disease that causes breast cells to grow out of control. The disease aff... ects different parts of the breast. The breast comprises three main parts, namely, connective tissues, lobules, and the ducts. Breast cancer mainly arises from the lobules and the duct. The type of breast cancer depends on the part of the breast from which it arises. There are several types of breast cancer, one of them being invasive ductal carcinoma. It is the most common type of breast cancer, accounting for most breast cancer patients (Waks & Winer, 2019). This type of breast cancer starts in the milk duct- the tube responsible for carrying milk to the nipple. It then spreads to other breast parts and, if not controlled early, may metastasize to other body parts. The second most common type of breast cancer is invasive lobular carcinoma (Waks & Winer, 2019). It starts in the lobules- part of the breast where milk is made. It then spreads to the surrounding tissues and is not easily detected on mammograms and other breast cancer examinations. Another type of disease is inflammatory breast cancer. This type of cancer affects both the ducts and the lobules and spreads faster to other parts of the breast and body. The disease causes inflammatory signs such as swelling of the breast surface (Waks & Winer, 2019). Another type of breast cancer is Paget's disease of the breast. It affects the skin of the nipple and leads to the creation of Paget cells. It is less common and mostly attacks patients who have been diagnosed with other types of breast cancer.
