Introduction
These practice materials can be used to support
foundation students who are targeting grades 1-4. They
are comprised of questions taken from previous series.
Mark schemes are included and can be found towards the
back of each set of materials.
Please remember to omit the mark schemes when
distributing the question pages to your students.

Component 2 – Mark scheme
Types of marks:
• M marks are for using a correct method and are not lost for purely numerical errors.
• A marks are for an accurate answer and depend on preceding M (method) marks. Therefore M0 A1 cannot be awarded.
• B marks are independent of M (method) marks and are for a correct final answer, a partially correct answer, or a correct intermediate stage.
• SC marks are for special cases that are worthy of some credit.
The following abbreviations are commonly found in GCSE Mathematics mark schemes.
• cao means correct answer only.
• figs 237, for example, means any answer with only these digits. You should ignore leading or trailing zeros and any decimal point e.g. 237000, 2.37, 2.370,
0.00237 would be acceptable but 23070 or 2374 would not.
• isw means ignore subsequent working (after correct answer obtained).
• nfww means not from wrong working.
• oe means or equivalent.
• rot means rounded or truncated.
• seen means that you should award the mark if that number/expression is seen anywhere in the answer space, including the answer line, even if it is not in the
method leading to the final answer.
• soi means seen or implied.GCSE (9-1) Mathematics Grades 1-4 Practice Materials

Question Answer Marks Part marks and guidance
1 (a) 12 or 18 1 Allow 12 and 18 but no extras
(b) Two from 2, 3, 5 2 B1 for one correct and one error If more than 2 values listed, max B1 scored
2 (a) (i) [0].9 1 Condone trailing zeros
(ii) [0].75 1
(b) 0.4
or 40 cm clearly identified
2 M1 for 2.4 ÷ 6 or 240 ÷ 6 soi Condone trailing zeros
M1 can be implied by fgs 4 as answer
3 (a) (i) 1.22 2 M1 for six or seven heights seen in the correct
order
1.13, 1.15, 1.20, 1.22, 1.23, 1.24, 1.30
(ii) 0.17 or 17 cm 2 M1 for 1.30 – 1.13 or 30 – 13 soi
(iii) 1.21 2 M1 for 8.47 ÷ 7 soi
(b) x such that 1.22 ≤ x < 1.30 2 M1 for selecting a value stating/indicating that
this leaves median unchanged or for selecting
a value stating/indicating that this reduces the
value of mean or for selecting a value stating/
indicating that this reduces the total of the
heights
4 (a) Rhombus 1 Accept any clear indication
(b) 2 1
(c) 12 2 M1 for 4 × 3 x 2 oe soi Accept any full method for area e.g. ½ × 4 × 6
5 (a) 28 1 Allow ±0.50
(b) 95 1 Allow ±1
(c) 72 3 Allow ±2
B1 for 1 kg costs £0.40 soi
M1 for their 0.4 × 180
or their cost × 180
their equivalent weight
e.g. 10 kg costs £4
e.g. 4 × 180 10
Note: award M2 for e.g. cost of 60 kg × 3
attempted
6 36% with a comparison of two correct values in
the same form (e.g. because 0.36 is bigger than
0.35)
4 B1 for one correct conversion
M1 for attempt to express both 7 and 36% in the
same form enabling a comparison
A1FT for correctly deciding which is bigger
e.g. 7 = 0.35, 35% or 35/100; 36% = 0.36 or
36/100
OR
M1 for fnding costs of weights that sum to
180 kg
M1 for addition of these costs

Question Answer Marks Part marks and guidance
7 Angle BDC = 44
Correct reasons leading to angle BDC = 44
2 2
B1 for angle ABD = 44 or angle ADC = 100
Or M1 for their BDC = their ABD
Two marks for
[co-]interior angles [add up to 180]
or allied angles [add up to 180]
or angles between parallel lines [add up to 180]
OR
One mark for each relevant reason (maximum
of two) from
[angles in a] triangle [add up to] 180
alternate [angles are equal]
corresponding [angles are equal]
angles on a straight line [add up to] 180
Notation not required but values need to be
identifed e.g. the angle must be named or
the value written in the correct place in the
diagram or for BDC, on the answer line
Ignore answer line if angle BDC is identifed
correctly in working
If BDC is only correctly labelled on the diagram
max B1 scored
Reasons must be correct for their method
leading to angle BDC = 44
180 may be implied in these reasons by a
correct calculation
8 (a) x = y + 2 1 Condone y + 2 = x
(b) d = C or d = C ÷ π 1 Condone C = d or C ÷ π = d
9 (a) (i) x = 3 1
(ii) y = x 1 Condone y = x ± 0
(b) Correct sketch of the graph of y = x2 1 U-shaped graph, approximately symmetrical
going through the origin
10 (a) Valid explanation 1 Such as It should be 2 e.g. 2 is more than half
(b) 6 : 11 or 1 : 11 or 1 : 15 or 6 : 1 1 Condone ratio not in its simplest form, e.g. using
6
and 11

e.g. 19 = 2 [green grapes]
(b) Red 15
Green 20
2 M1 for fraction equivalent to 4 or 3 seen
9 7
Or B1 for 3k red grapes and 4k green grapes, k
a positive integer > 1 seen in working or as fnal
answer
If 0 scored, SC1 for red 16 green 20
or red 20 green 15
12 36 and 45 1
13 [0].35 oe 2 M1 for 1 – (0.2 + 0.45) oe isw conversion to other forms
M1 implied by answer 0.53
14 (a) 19 31 1
(b) 2 10 12 2 B1 for 12 as third term
Or B1 for their 1st term + their 2nd term = their
