PSYC 110N Week 4 Discussion: Motivation and Emotion & Theories of Personality: With Responses (Option 1) Option 1: This week we learned about several different theories of motivation including, ... McClelland's theory of motivation, drive reduction theory, arousal approaches, incentive approaches, and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Describe a recent accomplishment in your life and explain it in terms of at least two theories of motivation discussed in the text. Compare and contrast the theories of motivation you chose to explain your example. Motivation is identified as the factors that direct and boost the conduct of both humans and other organisms. It can be either biological, cognitive, or social aspects, leading psychologists to create a variety of approaches (Feldman, 2019). One accomplishment that I am most proud of is being able to participate in Chamberlain’s Nursing Program. For many years I had been stressing to get into a nursing program and many obstacles had interfered in doing so. Whether it had been money related, motivation, work interference, or simply being mentally and emotionally ready for the time needed to be designated into the program, there was always a reason for not being able to go. Thus, already into my third session here at Chamberlain feels like I had won the lottery already. The hard work that I put into my studies and the grades that follow my hard work have really paid off so far in the program. My family and friends are super proud of the accomplishment that I have made to this point and so am I. The theories that were behind this accomplishment were stemmed from incentive approaches and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Feldman (2019) defines incentive approaches as aspirations to achieve external rewards. This is true in a sense of the grades that I achieve throughout the program. I strive to be an over achiever and when the grades reflect the hard work put into each class, it allows me to feel the extent of the accomplishment. Mcleod (2020) defines Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs as a motivational theory in psychology that includes a five-tier pyramid of human desires. These needs include physiology (food and clothing), safety (job security), love and belonging needs (friendship), esteem, and self-actualization. After the unfortunate pandemic hit last year, I had lost my job and my self-esteem dropped remarkably. The worry of being able to put food on the table, feeling any self-fulfillment, job security, sensing any self-worth, and the worry if someone was going to break into my home and take what I had left was a reality that I was not prepared to endure. Many people can relate to my situation and we would not wish these emotions on our worst enemy. My first approach was putting two extra dead bolts on each entrance of my home because of the number of break-ins occurring in the area. Then, I started to exercise a lot more and work on myself to keep a clear mind. After applying to many jobs, with no one hiring, I decided to take nursing back into consideration. After a long and successful phone call with Ms. Gunderson, I decided to apply into the program. Then she had given me even better news about the HESI not being counted against us and that is when I backed up a few steps, ran, and took a swan dive into this opportunity. Once my application was processed and approved, my self-esteem started to build back up again. I had the security of if and when I graduate, I would no longer have to worry about putting food on the table, and the ability to move into a better area, etc. were soon to be available. It was like I had seen a light at the end of the tunnel. These theories intertwine perfectly with my life and what I gravitate towards into becoming a successful, determined, and hardworking nurse. They both relate into gaining more of a self-rewarding aspect of life. The only contrast that I can grasp with the two theories is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is based off of a pyramid (levels) type of approach that covers more basic needs and incentive approach is directed at a simpler approach for external rewards. I look at it as when I attain the basic needs, as described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, then it aspired to incentive approaches and vice versa. References: Feldman, R. S. (2019). Hello Professor, This video was great and touched me in many ways. I love how he started off as a normal human being with admitting regret in his life and correlating humor into it. The candle problem was an experiment that had my mind twisting. I actually had to pause the video to see if I could figure it out. Surprisingly, my husband nailed it! I lost a bet and had to make his lunch today (LOL!). Shortly after it said, “for dummies,” too funny! Then after Dan Pink started to get more emotionally involved into his speech, he said something that really grasped. “If you want people to perform better, you reward them. Right?” When in reality it “dulls thinking.” He emphasizes how overlooked this issue is and that science supports it. At the end of the day, the team with no rewards were the ones who were able to get the task done more quickly. Incredible! Thank you, Dominique Sanchez [Show More]
