I-clicker (any version) is optional for extra credit attendance points. Course Description: Genetics 3400 (CRN 41691). Fundamentals of classical and molecular genetics. Selected topics in human genetics, microbial genetics, biochemical genetics, molecular biology, cytogenetics and genomics. Prerequisite(s): Bio 111. Recommended Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course students should be able to: 1. describe the structure of the genetic material and the organization of genomes 2. describe how cells and genetic material are divided by mitosis and meiosis 3. predict the outcomes of Mendelian genetic crosses 4. predict the outcomes of crosses involving modified Mendelian genetics, such as incomplete dominance, codominance, multiple alleles, epistasis and sex-linked inheritance 5. deduce a genetic explanation for the outcome of a genetic cross or a pedigree 6. predict how genetic linkage affects inheritance and use linkage data to construct a genetic map 7. use probability and statistics to predict genetic outcomes or analyze genetic data 8. describe how the information encoded by DNA is used to make RNA and protein, and how new traits may arise by changes in the DNA sequence 9. describe how the expression of genes is regulated in prokaryotes and eukaryotes 10. explain how the major techniques used in the practice of genetics work 11. apply the principles of genetics to other topics of study in biology such as cancer or development Style of the course: Classroom style lectures, assigned reading, and homework assignments will complement each other. Power point presentations will be made available in PDF format only on Moodle. I would recommend printing the slides and taking notes on them in class.
