(2 points) The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S.-owned utility that provides users with positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services. This system consists of three segments: the space segment, the control segment, and the user segment. The U.S. Air Force develops, maintains, and operates the space and control segments. b. Briefly summarize the history of the GPS. (2 points) GPS has its origins in the Sputnik era when scientists were able to track the satellite with shifts in its radio signal known as the "Doppler Effect." The United States Navy conducted satellite navigation experiments in the mid 1960's to track US submarines carrying nuclear missiles. c. Give at least two examples of how the GPS is used. (2 points) GPS systems are extremely versatile and can be found in almost any industry sector. They map forests, help farmers harvest their fields, and navigate airplanes on the ground or in the air.
