Organization: Problem Solution
Audience analysis: My audience consists of 3 people—one middle-aged white man, one
middle-aged white woman, and one white young man.
Topic: I will be addressing the serious problem of abortion in our culture that
goes against God’s value of human life.
General Purpose: To persuade
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience members about abortion, and to persuade them
that pro-life Christians should encourage and educate women considering
abortion to seek other options that preserve God’s value of life.
Introduction:
I. Attention-Getter
What makes life valuable? When does personhood begin? At conception? Or after birth?
According to the Science of Embryology, the unborn is a living organism of the human
species from the moment of conception. However, abortion became legal in all 50 states
on January 22, 1973 because the unborn are not considered persons protected by the 14th
Amendment.
II. Motive for Listening
Unplanned pregnancies affect nearly half of American women. In a difficult pregnancy, it
is important to seek God’s will and apply principles from a Biblical worldview.
III. Credibility Statement
The topic of abortion was first introduced to me in my Christian school. I’ve studied the
arguments from both pro-life and pro-choice sides, and through the Bible, I have come to
believe that abortion is the taking of human life, which God prohibits.
IV. Thesis Statement
Abortion is an ethical issue that has ended over 53 million pregnancies in the United
States, which goes against the value God has for human life and the duty Christians have
to preserve life when possible.
V. Preview Statement
In the next few minutes, I will discuss how the problem of abortion has impacted
America; I will explain how God views the unborn and how the Christian believer can
promote the Scriptural value of life.
Transition: Let’s take a closer look at this.
Body:
I. Main Point 1. Abortion is a serious beginning of life issue that has ended more than 53
million pregnancies since 1973 ("Induced Abortion in the United States.").

A. According to Guttmacher Institute, “Twenty-one percent of all pregnancies
(excluding miscarriages) end in abortion [in the United States].”
B. “Each year 1.7% of women aged 15-44 have an abortion. Half have had at least
one previous abortion.”
C. Studies by the Guttmacher Institute indicate that 89% of reasons for terminating
an unwanted pregnancy are due to inadequate funds, not ready for
responsibility/life change, problems in the unmarried relationship, too
young/immature, or already having grown kids. 6% of reasons were due to a fetal
or maternal health problem, and 1% of reasons were pregnancies due to rape or
incest.
Transition: This brings me to me second point.
II. Main Point 2. God values the human life of the unborn and considers them to be persons
(Alban).
A. According to Psalm 139:13-16, God creates each human life in a unique way in
the womb, and He knows the unborn, which implies personhood.
B. Psalm 51:5 and Luke 1:41, 44 show that the unborn have distinct human
characteristics of sin and joy.
Transition: This brings me to my final point.
III. Main Point 3. The Christian duty is to preserve life when possible (Yonts).
A. The SLED test is a logical argument against abortion that argues that the only
differences between an embryo and an adult are Size, Level of development,
Environment, and Degree of dependency (Shlemon).
1. Size: Comparing the size of a four-year-old to a 14 year old does
not give less value of life to the four-year-old because of the smaller size.
Likewise, the unborn can’t be killed for the reason of being smaller in
comparison to the four year old.
2. Level of development: A four-year-old also does not have the fully
developed reproductive system of a fourteen-year-old. Yet this
underdevelopment does not give less value of life to the four-year-old.
Both the unborn and the four-year-old have equal rights to life, no matter
the level of development.
3. Environment: Your life value as a person doesn’t change when
you walk into a different room, or go underwater, or travel in outer space.
The 7-inches of space separating the fetus in utero from the outside world
we know also does not change the right to their life as a person.
4. Degree of dependency: The unborn depend on the nutrition of the
mother to live. After birth, the newborn continues to depend on the
mother’s milk, and into adulthood the person continues to depend on the
mother to provide food, shelter, clothing, and care. The unborn’s degree of
dependency does not justify the means to end the life of that person.
B. You can be part of the solution by helping women who are considering abortion.
1. Talk to her. Ask what her morals and feelings toward abortion are.
Ask why she feels a struggle to make this decision. Don’t be judgmental
towards her. Allow her to be open with you about whether she believes it

is wrong or right, and listen to her. Point her towards the Scriptures on this
issue and present the alternatives. If feels she can’t support the child on
her own, educate her on adoption and pregnancy centers such as the
Liberty Godparent Home and the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center. Present
the Gospel when necessary, and suggest that she start reading the Bible.
Introduce her to a church where truth is taught and where her faith can
grow (Yonts).
2. To a woman who suffers after having an abortion, let her know
that you care and want to help. Let her know that God has a plan for every
situation, and that forgiveness can be found in Him. Ask if she knows
Jesus as Savior, and present the Gospel as necessary. Encourage her to
seek God by prayer and reading the Bible, and introduce her to a Biblebelieving church. Pray with her for forgiveness and strength (Yonts).
Transition: This brings me to my conclusion.
Conclusion:
I. Summary
I have established that abortion is a continuing problem in our culture. Abortion is not
only the termination of pregnancy, it is the killing of human life. God considers the
unborn persons created to live a full life. As Christians, we have the duty to preserve life
when possible and protect the lives of the unborn. You can m
