Physics > Lab Report > Signal Transmission Along a Nerve Axon | Download for quality grades | (All)
Introduction: An axon in the human body is responsible for moving an electrical potential across the soma of the neuron to the dendrites of the next neuron. This function/process allows the cells t... o communicate together. Active transport is necessary as it allows faster and bigger transport of molecules that are needed across the body. The axon of a nerve cell is comparable to an electrical wire that is hooked up to a battery. Due to this property we are able to model the nerve’s action potential across a given time. Drawing on our skills with resistors and circuits, we were able to create a model that allowed us to visualize the action potential across resistors and the circuit. With the use of a multimeter, we were able to see the change in voltage as the current went through the multiple resistors we had set up. The overall model we made was to represent passive transport across the nerve axons. The question we tried to answer was if passive transport is a feasible method of signal transmission. Our equation paper includes the relative equations required to find the various relationships required to complete the experiment. Procedure: The set up for the lab was simple and the experiment was conducted in accordance to a nerve axon. Using a circuit board, we were able to string up resistors of three different Ohms and test our theory. Using a multimeter we tested the voltage drop across the series and parallel circuit.
