NURS 3150 Week 3 Assignment Methods Used in Quantitative Research NURS 3150 Section 01, Foundations of Nursing Research January 27, 2019 Journal Club... Template for Quantitative Research Article The purpose of this assignment is to describe the research design and methodology. Please discuss the research design, the sample selection, the data collection methods, the data collection measures and/or tools, and the plans for data analysis. Please do not focus on or include the results of the study. (Use this template and make sure to support the information that you have used in the template. Each section of the template needs to be fully developed and written well in a succinct manner.) Purpose of study: Research Design The research design of this study is quasi-experimental pre and postimplementation design with the aim “quantify quantitative outcomes of a practice change to a blended for of bedside nursing report (Sand-Jecklin, Sherman, 2014). This is quasi experimental because the study lacks a control group (Gray, Grove, Sutherland, 2017). The study also points out that patient satisfaction or dissatisfaction could be the result of uncontrolled variables which also points to quasi-experimental. Sample Selection The sample selection was obtained from 7 medical surgical units in large university hospital. Patient requirements consisted of being in the hospital for at least 48 hours with plans to be discharged home. At baseline data collection a convenience sample of 233 patients were surveyed, 157 patients surveyed at 3 months post implementation and 154 patients at 13 months postimplementation. If patients were not appropriate to fill out their own surveys, family was encouraged to with 70 filled out at baseline, 72 at 3 months and 53 at 13 months postimplementation. Nurses from the same 7 medical surgical units that worked every shift were also surveyed at the same time as the patients. At baseline, 148 nurses surveyed, 98 at 3 months and 54 at 13 months. The most common age range of the nurses was 22-34 yrs old with a mean age in nursing of 10.2-10.5. Many of the nurses had their BSN and not a significant difference in demographics. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Weaknesses A convenience sample can also be viewed as a negative due to unintended biases or not a full representation of the population. The study didn’t note that each nurse surveyed could only answer one online survey. If the nurse felt passionately either way regarding bedside report, could they have possibly filled out the survey more than once therefore skewing the data? Also, a new process was implemented by the hospital regarding mediation errors. This could have impacted the culture of medication administration while the study was occurring.
