ASL critical thinking questions-Unit 2 1. There are several reasons that stories are passed down from generation to generation. What are some of the different reasons that you think stories would be ... passed down in either Deaf or hearing cultures? Can you think of some example stories from each culture to support your reasons? 2. Every culture has its own traditions and stories. But some cultures also enrich the world with their own unique products, objects, art or concepts. Some products might have been born from necessity while others help people express their individuality and exhibit their culture. Identify as many products of culture as you can that are related to the Deaf world; they could come from sports and recreation, arts, communication, or from simple everyday activities and customs such as storytelling and clothing. Briefly explain why they can be considered particular to the Deaf community and how they came to be. 3. In this unit, you learned about Deaf news outlets. Look up a Deaf news source such as the Daily Moth or DPAN. Briefly look at the current headlines listed. Now look at the headlines listed on your local TV News station’s website. Compare and contrast the topics of the stories, noting the similarities and differences. Why do you think that so many Deaf news organizations exist? Why can’t Deaf people just use the same news media that hearing people do? 4. In this unit, you have learned the basics of good storytelling. Based on this and other information you have acquired about Deaf culture, create instructions to give to someone who is unfamiliar with ASL storytelling to help them understand what makes for good and bad storytelling. Explain the impact storytelling can have and how it can be used in different situations, from daily life events to business settings 5. Deaf clubs have long been the default option for Deaf people to meet, connect, and enjoy signing together. However, the number of Deaf clubs has recently been decreasing across the country. Consider what might be a reason for this trend and whether Deaf clubs are being replaced with other things. Finally, discuss if you think this is a positive change for Deaf people or if it might negatively impact Deaf culture. [Show More]
