What are Peter van Daan's thoughts to being Jewish? About how he wishes to live after the war?
- ✔✔In Anne's February 16, 1944 diary entry, she mentions that Peter "said life would have been
much easier if he'd been a Christian or could become on after the war." This shows that Peter
almost wishes he wasn't Jewish. The Jews were persecuted for their beliefs, which was
completely unfair. Peter recognizes this, and it makes him very angry. Later in the same entry,
Anne tells us he said that "after the war he'd make sure nobody would know he was Jewish,"
which tells us that Peter does not have much pride in his religion. He is and wants to continue to
be a practicing Jew, but he would make sure no one knew he was Jewish because he was afraid
of being persecuted. It shows us that after the war, Peter intended to keep his beliefs to himself
so that he would not have to live in fear.
What does Anne say about how her personality has changed after two years in hiding? -
✔✔Before going into hiding, Anne was very flirtatious and was always surrounded by a large
group of friends and admirers. In the March 7, 1944 diary entry, Peter says to Anne, "Whenever I
saw you, you were always surrounded by a flock of girls and at least two boys, you were always
laughing, and you were always the center of attention!" At the beginning of her diary, Anne also
mentions her admirers and how they always walked her home from school. After spending two
years in hiding, Anne begins to realize that she wasn't really happy in her life prior to hiding. She
states "I look back at that Anne Frank as a pleasant, amusing, but superficial girl, who has
nothing to do with me." (March 7, 1944) Anne notes that she was never really being herself, and
that she does not want that life back. Additionally, Anne says that "I want friends, not admirers.
People who respect me for my character and my deeds, not my flattering smile. The circle
around me would be much smaller, but what does that matter, as long as they're all sincere?"
This also proves that Anne does not miss her old life. She is satisfied with the person she has
become after two years in hiding. Many of her so called friends from her life in 1942 were not
friends but admirers. They were attracted to her because she was social, popular, and pretty.
However, most of these people were not truly her friends. Anne longs for a true friend (which
she later discovers in Peter), which, ultimately, is the reason she started her diary.
Anne Frank speaks about happiness in one of her diary entries. What does she say about
happiness? Where can happiness be found? What does this reveal about Anne Frank? - ✔✔Being
in hiding for two years really gives Anne a new perspective on the world. She states throughout
the diary that despite the fact that she is not thrilled with her situation, she realizes that other
people have it worse off than she does, and she tries to stay positive. Towards the second half of
her diary, Anne really begins to rely on nature and God to keep her spirits up. When the weather
is good, she often says it makes her "perk up." On February 23, 1944, she says, "I firmly believe
that nature can bring comfort to all those who suffer... As long as you can look fearlessly at the
sky, you'll know that you're pure within and will find happiness once more." This shows that
Anne believes that nature will make anyone happy. She thinks that if people can just look at the
sky and the trees and know that God is with them, they will realize that there is good in the
world, and that will cheer them up.
What does Anne Frank state about her future plans? Margot's future plans? In short, what do
these young women wish to be when they grow up? - ✔✔On March 20, 1944 in a letter to Anne,
Margot wrote, "I'm just sorry I haven't found anyone with whom to share my thoughts and
feelings, and I'm not likely to in the near future." This tells us that Margot wants to find a friend
or husband - someone she can trust and confide in the way Anne confided in Kitty. On March 22,
1944, Anne states, "All these jokes about marrying Peter if we stayed here long enough weren't
so silly after all." This demonstrates that Anne is beginning to have stronger feelings for Peter,
but she also thinks that if they do develop a relationship and stay in hiding for a really long time
it might not be so ridiculous if they did end up getting married. She thinks that she might be
stuck in hiding for a lot longer and is starting to explore the possibilities. On May 8, 1944, Anne
says, "I'd like to spend a year in Paris and London learning the languages and studying art
history. Compare that with Margot, who wants to nurse newborns in Palestine." Anne dreams of
a future in the arts and traveling to different countries. Margot, on the other hand, wants to go
into the medical field for a more pragmatic career.
Anne believes people are, by nature, good at heart. Why would she believe this? - ✔✔Anne grew
up during one of the darkest times in the history of the world. While she was in hiding, she had
to live in constant fear of being discovered by the Nazis and killed (which, unfortunately, is what
happened). The Nazis were cruel people who rarely gave any thought to how the Jews felt. By
believing that people are good at heart, Anne believed that the Nazis were not so cruel as they
seemed. She knew about concentration camps and death marches, however, she never
experienced these things until the end of her life. Because of this opinion, Anne had a positive
outlook on life. If she had been constantly pessimistic, she would not have had a good life
because she would have lived in fear and unhappiness. In order to stay positive, Anne chose to
believe that people are good at heart; this positivity enabled her to lead a happy, normal (for the
time period) life until she was forced to go into hiding.
One can state that Anne Frank was an early feminist. What evidence is there in the diary that
would indicate that Anne Frank was considered an early feminist? - ✔✔On June 13, 1944, Anne
states that "One of the many questions that have often bothered me is why women have been,
and still are, thought to be inferior to men... I'd really like to know the reason for this great
injustice." She doesn't understand why women are considered to be "less" than men or why men
are always treated better. Although the concept of feminism was not around at the time Anne
wrote her diary, women, including Anne, did wonder why they were inferior to men. Anne does
not like being viewed as the lesser gender, which indicated that she could have been an early
feminist.
Who is Mr. van Hoeven? What happens to him? How does this effect the members of the Secret
Annex? - ✔✔Mr. van Hoeven was the man who supplied potatoes for the people in the Secret
Annex. He was arrested and sent to Neuengamme (a concentration camp) for hiding two Jews in
his house. On May 25, 1944, Anne wrote, "Mother says we'll skip breakfast, eat hot cereal and
bread for lunch, and fried potatoes for dinner, and, if possible, vegetables or lettuce once or twice
a week... We're going to be hungry, but nothing's worse than being caught." Because of Mr. van
Hoeven's arrest, the members of the Secret Annex will not be able to have three meals a day,
which will no doubt result in a cranky family.
