CBSPD Technician Certification Exam
Study Terms
Bacillus stearothermophilus ✔✔An organisms that a is commonly used as an indicator organism
for the appropriate functioning of autoclaves because it grows at 56°C
Bacillus atrophaeus ✔✔spore used to monitor EtO and dry heat sterilization efficacy
Bacteria ✔✔(microbiology) single-celled or noncellular spherical or spiral or rod-shaped
organisms lacking chlorophyll that reproduce by fission
Bacteriocidal ✔✔agent that kills bacteria
Bacteriostatic ✔✔inhibits growth of bacteria
Bioburden ✔✔The number of viable organisms in or on an object or surface or the organic
material on a surface or object before decontamination or sterilization.
Biological indicator ✔✔A quality control mechanism used in the process of sterilization. It
consists of a closed system containing harmless, spore-forming bacteria that can be rapidly
cultured after the sterilization process.
Biological Monitor ✔✔Verifies sterilization by confirming that all spore-forming
microorganisms have been destroyed
biopsy ✔✔the removal of living tissue from the body for diagnostic examination
Bowie-Dick Test ✔✔Test used to evaluate the efficacy of the air removal in a dynamic-airremoval steam sterilizer. Performed Daily.
Bacillus ✔✔Rod shaped bacteria
Cavitation ✔✔The ultrasonic cleaner removes debris from instruments by a process called
cavitation. High-frequency sound waves are generated through a water bath. Cavitation causes
tiny air spaces trapped within debris to implode (explode inwardly), and this releases the debris
from the surface of the instrument.
Chemical Indicator ✔✔A chemical indicator (monitor) is a chemically treated strip that changes
color when exposed to a specific temperature, pressure, and humidity. The pellet form of this
indicator is contained in a glass vial. Chemical monitors are available for both steam and EO
sterilization. The chemical responds to high temperature, pressure, and humidity but does not
register exposure time, which is critical to the sterilization process. A chemical monitor should
be placed inside and outside all packs to be sterilized. After the cycle, the indicator must be
retrieved and interpreted.
EtO Sterilization Process ✔✔1. Preconditioning
2. Preheat
3. Add moisture
4. Add EtO, allow to penetrate load and sterilize by alkylation
Event-related sterility ✔✔Sterility determined by how a package is handled rather than time
elapsed; a package is considered sterile until opened or the integrity of packaging material is
damaged
Epidemiology ✔✔Branch of medical science concerned with the incidence, distribution, and
control of diseases that affect large numbers of people.
fenstrated ✔✔having openings
Fomite ✔✔A physical object that serves to transmit an infectious agent from person to person.
gram positive ✔✔Describing the group of bacteria that have a cell wall that is structurally less
complex and contains more peptidoglycan than the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. Grampositive bacteria are usually less toxic than gram-negative bacteria.
gram negative ✔✔Describing the group of bacteria that have a cell wall that is structurally more
complex and contains less peptidoglycan than the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria. Gramnegative bacteria are often more toxic than gram-positive bacteria.
germicide ✔✔a substance that destroys microorganisms
Glutaraldehyde ✔✔Solution used for high-level disinfection and sterilization
Staphylococcus ✔✔a genus of gram-positive bacteria that are potential pathogens, causing local
lesions and serious opportunistic infections, a cluster of cocci
