SOCS-350N Week 7 Assignment: Essay – Interviews
Interview 1
What is your ethnicity/race or age?
I’m twenty six years old/Latina
What is your level of education?
I am currently in my second semester of Nursing School
What is your occupation?
I’m a Emergency Department Tech
Have you ever experienced discrimination in the workplace? How did you feel? How did you react?
Yes, I have on many occasions. One of the most recent one and the reason why I left my previous job was because I applied for a Lead Tech position and I was discriminated against. I thought I was going to get the position because out of the three candidates that they interviewed I was the most experienced and I had the most seniority. I was the only Latina. A week later after they interviewed all the candidates for the position they called me and told me that I did not get the position because I didn’t have all the qualities that they were looking for in a Lead Tech. then I found out that they gave the position to a guy that just had started a few months with no previous experience. I know I was discriminated against because the manager who interviewed me has made some racial comments about Latinos.
Please explain what happened.
I was very upset about the whole situation. I even lost my confidence, and it also made me feel incompetent. I thought I had a problem, but then I realized that unfortunately there are people who have the mentality of feeling superior to others because of their race and skin color. Months after that ordeal, I left the place and tried to move on. I know I should have reported it, but I was afraid that the manager might retaliate against me because I said something, so I decided to stay quiet.
During your lifetime, what significant current event have you experienced?
One of the latest significant events that have impacted my life is the death of George Floyd. His death was not only about the African American community but all minorities in general.
Unfortunately, his death proves that racism exists on all levels. It is sad that something like this happens before our society comes into the realization that racism is real and it has yet to be resolved.
How has this significant event shaped your experiences with others?
I think experiences like this make you stronger and you kind of create a tough skin. I’ve also tried to educate myself and learn about other ethnics groups. I also try to never categorize people based on their cultural background.
According to The Center for Public Integrity, more than 100,000 people report employment discrimination and harrasment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and its state and local partner agencies each year (The Center for Public Integrity,n.d). I believe in equality and the importance that the hiring process must be fair. During the hiring process
organization must ensure that every applicant is treated with respect and fairness. We all should be offered the same opportunities based on our academic background, experience, and skills.
Your race or ethnicity should not determine your ability to perform in a job position.
I can identify with my interviewee. I’ve been discriminated against on multiple occasions because of my race. Luckily I haven’t been discriminated against at my current job because they have a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, and everyone treats each other with respect. I think it is because I always try to go above and beyond my duties as an employee. I’m a perfectionist, and one of the reasons is that I don’t want people to judge me based on my race, I want to be recognized for my work ethic. This is another reason why I further my education.
Interview II
What is your ethnicity/race or age?
I’m forty five years old. I’m African American
What is your level of education?
I have a bachelors in Nursing
What is your occupation?
I’m a Clinical Nurse in an Emergency Department
Have you ever experienced discrimination in the workplace? How did you feel? How did you react? Please explain what happened.
Yes, I have. Not only because of my race but also for my physical disability. I had an excellent job before coming to this hospital. However, I ended up quitting after having a bad experience
with one of the managers when I applied for a Nurse Educator position. I was not too fond of how I was treated throughout the interview; they made me feel like I was going to fail as a Nurse Educator because of my disability. I reported it and followed the chain of command, but nothing was done, so I decided to move on, and now I work here.
During your lifetime, what significant current event have you experienced?
What we are actually leaving right now, Covid19/Pandemic. Our new normal
How has this significant event shaped your experiences with others?
The pandemic has not only changed my life but the lives of everyone else in this world. I've had family members and friends that passed away from it. This has allowed me to cherish every moment that I have with the people that I love. I wish this would change the hearts of every community and fight this battle together. It's time to put stereotypes apart and start to help each other out in order to get ahead in whatever we have for the future.
I have not encountered discrimination due to physical disability, as my interviewed had in his previous job. In my current workplace, there are accommodations and numerous policies that protect employers with disabilities and prohibits discrimination. If for some reason, the employee cannot work on the floor due to a physical disability, they find an alternate job that would meet their needs. We also had parking areas very close to the entrance for people with physical disabilities. I believe my organization is doing a pretty good job of following the law regarding disability discrimination. According to U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Disability Discrimination law forbids discrimination when it comes to any aspect of
employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignment, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits, and other term or condition of employment. (U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,nd).
In conclusion, It is unfortunate that even in the 21st century, we are still talking about this issue. Thousand of people are facing discrimination daily, and we must fight this battle forcefully. Organizations must ensure that their policies against discrimination are followed in order to give everyone equal opportunities. This would help thousands of employees waiting to progress in their professional careers and show their skills and talent.
