As a result Healthy People 2020 have listed substance abuse as one of their topics. Substance abuse can include drugs or alcohol problems and can affect not only the abuser but family, friends, and healthcare workers as well. Within this paper a discussion of the problem, the identification of epidemiological data, Healthy People 2020 goals and a plan for how to reduce the numbers of substance abusers will be discussed with a summarization in the conclusion. Discussion of Problem According to Healthy People 2020 (2018c), there was an estimated 22 million people living with substance abuse in 2005. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2018), states that from 1999 to 2016 there were 351, 630 deaths that were related to opioid abuse alone and the mortality rate had increased 27.7% from 2015 to 2016 (Seth, Scholl, Rudd, Bacon, 2018; Vivolo-Kantor, 2018). The numbers of deaths related to excessive alcohol use was 79,646 between 2001 to 2005 (Healthy People, 2018b). [Show More]
