RLGN 104 week 4 notes Hindson ch. 6 Difference between new and old testament: cross of Jesus Christ stands in between Deut. 21: 22-23 --- curse John (disciple) accompanied by Mary, her... sister Salome, Mary Magdalene, and some women from Galilee “The physical effects of crucifixion were appalling. Of all deaths, it is the most lingering and agonizing.”- Michael Green At the place of the skull (Golgotha), the sin debt was paid once for all Tetelestai- paid in full The key to understanding the cross is love Ch. 7- Resurrection Resurrection of Christ ultimate proof he was son of God strongest argument for the truth of Christianity Every one of the disciples eventually sealed his testimony with his life. Each one died a martyr, claiming the message was true Time has not invalidated their testimony; it has only reinforced its truth Appeared to Mary Magdalen first, then peter, two disciples, then to 10 disciples 1 Cor. 15:6 appeared to 500 people at once Who moved the stone? 1. The women—too weak. 2. The disciples—too afraid. 3. The Jews—no possibility. 4. The Romans—why bother? 5. Grave robbers—not likely. 6. The guards—inconceivable. Mat. 28:2--- angel moved it Ch. 8- lostness of humanity sinfulness of humankind is the one biblical doctrine for which there is no lack of empirical evidence Being saved through faith means to simply place faith or trust in Jesus Christ as Lord, believing his atonement was sufficient for the forgiveness of our sins Repentance no other way to be saved Rom. 10:3 Powell Ch. 11- Resurrection 1 Cor. 15:12-19 if Jesus was not resurrected from the dead, then the entire Christian faith is worthless, a waste of time If it is true, the resurrection confirms the teaching of Jesus as having the authority of God Resuscitation= someone comes back to life but still cannot escape death in the future Resurrection= someone comes back to life and will never die again According to Gary Habermas the disciples were the ones who removed the dead body of Jesus persisted in the early centuries after Jesus' death SWOON THEORY says that Jesus only appeared to be dead but wasn’t For the swoon theory to be true, Jesus would have had to have not only survived the spear piercing His heart and one of His lungs, but He would have had to control how much blood flowed out of the wound by sheer willpowerTWIN THEORY Suggests that Jesus had twin brother that took his place on the cross no reason to believe it, no evidence doesn’t explain empty tomb STOLEN BODY THEORY says that Jesus' followers stole His body from the tomb The weakness of the stolen body theory is that it does not account for the behavior of the disciples Biblical references have no information about death of james, son of Alphaeus HALLUCINATION THEORY Followers and disciples of Jesus hallucinated and saw Jesus raised from the dead also has the problem of the empty tomb WRONG TOMB THEORY states that disciples claimed the tomb was empty because it was the wrong one The oldest argument against the resurrection is that the tomb was empty, which presumes the correct tomb was visited THE ALIEN THEORY States that Jesus was an alien from another planet there is no possible way to prove the theory right or wrong confmation bias LEGEND THEORY most popular non-resurrection theory Jesus was either never taken down from the cross and was left to rot and be eaten by birds of prey, or His body was thrown in a common grave and eaten by scavenging dogs problem with this story is that it does not account for the claim of the Jews that Jesus' body was stoew Testament books were written—to combat false teaching about Jesus. legend theorists reject the idea that the apostles claimed Jesus was resurrected in bodily form The understanding the apostles had of resurrection came from the tradition of the Pharisees. o resurrection of the physical body to an incorruptible state at the end of time Islam teaches that Jesus never died but was assumed into heaven. To the proponents of this theory, these passages provide justification for believing that a legend had developed and that the resurrection of Jesus has no historical basis The better explanation is that the accounts are complementary and corroborative. most biblical references have no information on the death of James Ch. 12- Did Jesus Claim to Be God? Is Jesus the Only Way? The word messiah comes from the Hebrew word for “anointed one.” word “Christ” is derived from the translation of “messiah” into Greek Jesus was viewed by His audiences through a lens distorted by misunderstood prophecies and unwarranted expectations Jesus never said he was God Another way Jesus claimed to be God is by accepting worship Every religion makes exclusive claims Blasphemestoned Really, instead of all roads leading to Rome, all roads lead to their own exclusive destination and do not even intersect. Weider Ch. 6 Romans 3:23 teaches that we are spiritually lost and in need of salvation. Romans 6:23 teaches that we deserve to be punished because we have a sinful heart. Isaiah 64:6a teaches that prior to salvation, even our best deeds or intentions are ineffective to save, and thus any attempt to save our own souls is repulsive to God Titus 3:5 teaches that there is no possible way to obtain salvation by our good thoughts or by our good deeds. o One who provides the cleansing of our sinful state: God Himself in the form of the Holy Spirit o Mat. 5:3 Penichrosneedy or poor Ptokosutterly impoverished Matthew 5:3 teaches that the one who approaches God and receives salvation has nothing to offer God in his attempt to persuade God to save him Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches that no person is able to boast about how they are able to save their own soul because salvation is made available in the form of a gift from God to all who desire to receive His salvation it is impossible to change your spiritual state by physical means According to Ephesians 2:8-9, the payment for one's sin must come from a source that is holy, righteous, and absent of any sin whatsoever We must be in agreement that our sinful state merits judgment and spiritual death. We must concede that we deserve to pay the penalty for our sin. Romans 5:8 add an interesting glimpse into the gracious heart of God found in the phrase, "while we were yet sinners." We have to believe that Jesus is 100 percent God We must believe that Jesus' sacrifice is sufficient in totality, and it is able to provide atonement for our sin. Romans 10:9-10 says, "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved Ch. 7- Belief versus Commitment Believing volitionally is an act of the will Your heart will have remorse over sin. Your heart will repent for your sin You will request salvation from sin. Emotion is based on personality and is no indication of spirituality or of whether or not salvation "took” This is evidenced in Romans 10:9-10 where we see that when we accept Christ we are responding in two ways. The second way is volitionally—an act of the will. Salvation is not the Physical Act of Uttering Words in Prayer Form those who do not accept Christ after they have been presented with the following truths 1. They are not at peace with God. 2. They are in close relationship with God's wrath (Eph 2:3). 3. They do not accept Christ's payment as the only way to appease the Father's wrath Sometimes the word salvation will refer to the consummation of our salvation [Show More]
