1. Review: Dependent vs. Independent Clauses
a. Clause: Subject AND a Predicate
i. Dependent clause
1. Can’t stand alone; it is a fragment.
2. Usually due to the presence of an AAAWWUBBIS word (a.k.a. a subordinating
conjunction)...
a. Although, After, As, When, While, Until, Before, Because, If, Since
ii. Independent clause
1. CAN stand alone; it is a complete sentence.
b. Phrase: Subject OR a Predicate (a fragment)
2. 4 Sentence Types: Formulas/Recipes
a. Simple: ____ independent clause
i. WATCH OUT: If it has a phrase in it, the sentence is STILL simple.
ii. Example: I enjoy helping you, my awesome students.
b. Compound: 2 independent clauses
i. WATCH OUT: This is where most run-ons happen. Be careful…
ii. Example: I tried to help you, but you chose not to listen.
c. Complex: 1 independent clause & 1 dependent clause
i. WATCH OUT: Make sure that introductory clauses get commas.
ii. Example: I trust you because you keep my secrets.
d. Compound-Complex: At least 2 independent clauses & 1 dependent clause
i. WATCH OUT: Don’t just label it C-C because it looks long.
ii. Example: Although we studied, our class failed the test; we understand it better now.
