Grammar Video Guided Notes: Sentence Types Lesson 1 of 2: Introduction 1. Review: Dependent vs. Independent Clauses a. Clause: Subject AND a Predicate i. Dependent clause 1. Can’t stand alone; ... it is a fragment. 2. Usually due to the presence of an AAAWWUBBIS word (a.k.a. a subordinating conjunction)... a. Although, After, As, When, While, Until, Before, Because, If, Since ii. Independent clause 1. CAN stand alone; it is a complete sentence. b. Phrase: Subject OR a Predicate (a fragment) 2. 4 Sentence Types: Formulas/Recipes a. Simple: ____ independent clause i. WATCH OUT: If it has a phrase in it, the sentence is STILL simple. ii. Example: I trust you because you keep my secrets. d. Compound-Complex: At least 2 independent clauses & 1 dependent clause i. WATCH OUT: Don’t just label it C-C because it looks long. ii.
