Isabela Lozano Texas A&M University at Qatar ENGR 216 June 26, 2019 Collision Characterization Purpose and Scope The purpose of this lab was to run a series of simulated collisions, to build up ... a database of collision information that can guide engineers during the real mission. Our objective of this lab was to find whether the momentum was conserved during the collisions, analyze whether the collisions were elastic and compare the soft collision vs. the hard collisions for each item mentioned above. Theory In this lab we used multiple equations to obtain the proper values and data that we needed. We began by verifying the conservation of momentum by using the following formula P1x=P2 x. The formula when written out is as follows m∗v1x+m∗v1 x=m∗v2x+m∗v2x . However, our masses are the same therefore they cancel out. We used the same formulas for the y component, it would be written as follows P1 y=P2 y . Here is the long version m∗v 1 y+m∗v1 y=m∗v2 y+m∗v2 y . Once we found that information, we analyzed the total kinetic energy of the system before and after the collisions to determine whether they were elastic using the following equation Ki=Kf . The equation can also be written as 12 ∗m v 21 + 12 ∗m v 21 = 12 ∗m v 22 + 12 ∗m v 22 with the velocity component calculated as v=√vx 2+v2y . Then we verified Newton’s third law using the following formula F1=−F2 . The F was calculated using the following equation F=√F2x+F2y . We used the exact same formulas listed above for the soft collision as well. Methods As usual, the camera was able to locate the position of each surface at the time of measurement due to the specific colored sticker on the center of the pucks. We began the lab by two of us getting on opposite ends of the frictionless table and releasing the pucks directly toward each other, to create a collision. We did this for both the hard and soft collision. Once, we had the data points we proceeded to analyze our graph and then use the following equations listed above to find the data we needed.
