It is aimed at students in their sophomore year, junior year, or first year of transfer to Rutgers-Newark who have a hunger to attain a strong post-grad opportunity, though students of all levels and majors can participate. Through online and peer learning, interactive experiences, and reflection, students will build meaningful networks, discover their innate leadership, and cultivate the “hard” and “soft” skills and habits of mind needed to thrive in twenty-first century workplaces and make a positive impact through their careers upon graduation. This course will require your commitment. Nothing good comes easy but this course will be equally rewarding as it is challenging. What you get from this course will depend on what you give, and you need to want to give to this course to get the most out of it.PAGE 2 OF 13 COURSE FORMAT This 3-unit course includes a lecture and activity section. The weekly 2-hour activity sections will include discussions and professional development simulations to practice and develop skills. LECTURE SECTION INCLUDES: • Weekly 90-120 minute online modules – To build your knowledge and skill • One in-person event at Rutgers-Newark or an employer site: o Storytelling as Leadership Workshop on Saturday, September 21 (9:30am-4pm) • Four projects (2-3 hours of work per week) – To practice skills, assess proficiency, and develop work products that you can incorporate into your career portfolio ACTIVITY SECTION INCLUDES: • Weekly in-person sections (also called Learning Labs) – To meet with your cohort and build skill through a combination of discussion, coaching, and feedback, and application toward real-life challenges or simulations. Sections will meet weekly on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings between 6:00-8:00pm on campus. Students and coaches will sign-up for the best section considering their availability. • Two 1:1 conversations with your Leadership Coach – The primary focus will be feedback and editing support on your resume, but additionally, you will discuss and reflect on progress toward your long-term goals. The first 1:1 will occur during the first half of the semester and the second will occur during the second half of the semester. • One group Capstone Challenge (3-4 hours of work per week) – To work as a team and build skill in complex problem-solving. Your cohort will work together to solve a problem for a local company and propose an innovative solution. This project culminates in a group presentation judged by the company’s employees. LEARNING OUTCOMES AND GOALS COURSE GOALS Braven has developed the following equation below for a career-ready college graduate, and thus the course goals are aligned to this equation. By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Know and practice the skills and mindsets that ‘potential’ employers hire for 2. Possess the confidence and professional skills to navigate the workplace 3. Build a record of achievement and apply skills to land a career-accelerating opportunity, thus gaining the experience needed to be workforce-ready 4. Expand personal and professional networksPAGE 3 OF 13 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PRIORITY SKILLS The following five course learning outcomes make up Braven’s Priority Skills and reflect the competency areas that define the “potential” employers hire for. These are the discrete skills that Braven prioritizes throughout the course:PAGE 4 OF 13 ABOUT BRAVEN Our belief is that our next generation of leaders will emerge from everywhere.
