Learning Objec#ves Our goal is to find an experiment model for the rela!onship between the release height and the final velocity for an object sliding down a fric!onless ramp. We will use that rela!onship to figure out a rela!onship between velocity and kine!c energy. ! Ge$ng Started The video below shows a descrip!on of the apparatus we'll be using, a superconduc!ng puck and a magne!c track. The puck is cooled to -196C in a liquid nitrogen bath. Then the puck is placed above the track, held in posi!on by a wood spacer. Through a process called "quantum locking" the puck remains the same height above the track. The puck can move along the track with virtually no fric!on. Watch the short video below to familiarize yourself with this apparatus. Video instance not printed. This next set of videos allows you to explore and experiment with this apparatus. You can select the mass of the puck, and the height from which the puck is released. Video instance not printed. ? Score: 0 / 1 Score: 0 / 1 When you click the tool menu , along with a stopwatch and rulers, you will see two tools you may not have used before. 1. Clicking the dot tool will bring up a marker like this: . You can drag the marker to mark a posi!on such as the star!ng point of the puck. The 2 on the tool means that you can place up to 2 markers. This can be useful for marking the star!ng and ending points for the puck. 2. Clicking line tool will bring up a horizontal line you can drag into place. This can be useful for measuring changes in height since the puck moves horizontally and ver!cally. Without collec!ng any data, describe the mo!on of the puck while it is on the curved por!on of the ramp. Assume we can ignore fric!on. The mo!on of the puck, while it is on the curved por!on of the ramp, is gaining speed due to downward mo!on. Without collec!ng any data, describe the mo!on of the puck while it is on the flat sec!on at the bo"om of the ramp. Assume we can ignore fric!on. The mo!on of the puck while on the flat sec!on of the ramp is gaining poten!al energy. Make sure the video is set to mass #1 and height K. For this ac!vity, you will need to take measurements to find the velocity of the puck once it reaches the flat sec!on of the ramp. If you want to find the velocity on the flat sec!on, where should you set your stopwatch to 0? At the start of the video (frame 0) When the puck is released (frame 51) When the puck reaches the flat sec!on of the ramp (frame 143)Student Response | Pivot Interactives 2/22/21, 8:25 AM https://app.pivotinteractives.com/assignments/602bf51ea7f724001e662874/responses Page 3 of 16 7. 8. 9. Note that this frame may be different for different heights and masses. In this ac!vity, you will look for a rela!onship between release height and final velocity. Which variable should be held constant? Release height Final velocity Mass Great work! Once you've set your video to the mass you will use, do not change that while you are collec!ng data! In this ac!vity, you will look for a rela!onship between release height and final velocity. Which variable will be the independent variable? Release height Final velocity Mass Great work! This variable will go on the horizontal axis of your graph. [Show More]
