Chapter 4 Short Answers
Total points = 20
Please answer the following questions regarding Chapter
4. Your answers to these questions are due by 11:59 PM on
Thursday 7-10-14.
Questions in italics are ones that you will not find direct
answers to in the text (but should read the text to be able to
think about and answer the question).
BE SURE TO PUT YOUR ANSWERS TO THE
QUESTIONS IN YOUR OWN WORDS!
#1. Straub (the author of our text) defines stress as “the
process by which a person both perceives and responds to
events that are judged to be challenging, or threatening.”
When I look at definitions of terms, I like to think about it
from the standpoint of a Martian coming down to Earth and
hearing that definition – would the definition actually help
them know what the concept is. To me, the definition given
in your text would not help a Martian actually know what
stress is. Below are several other definitions of stress. I
believe that by combining various parts of different
definitions, one can come to a reasonable definition of
stress that would at least give a Martian a shot at
understanding what stress is. So, you should try to combine
different parts of the definitions (retaining or omitting parts
as you see fit) to try to arrive at the best and most
escriptive definition of stress that you can. (2 points)
Stress is a biological and psychological response
experienced on how we encounter a threat that we feel
we do not have the resources to deal with.
(Depending on the answers, I may share some answers
from students with the class as a whole -- anonymously.)
• ♥ Stress = response to a discrepancy between the
normal, steady state of the person and some changed
condition of the environment
• ♥ Stress = transaction of the person and the
environment that includes the person’s appraisal of the
challenges posed by the situation as well as available
coping resources, along with the psychological and
physiological response to those perceived challenges
• ♥ Stress = process by which environmental events
threaten or challenge an organism’s well-being and by
which that organism responds to this threat
• ♥ Stress = negative emotional experience
accompanied by predictable biochemical,
physiological, cognitive, and behavioral changes that
are directed toward altering the stressful event or
accommodating to its effects
