Physics 103A-003 Lab 7 Archimedes’ Principle and Density Names: Fatimah Akhtar, Aisha Alam, Megha Bansal, Ali Chahine, Rashmi Ketha, Brijen Patel Expediter: Fatimah Akhtar To understand Archi... medes’ Principle and to measure the density of unknown substances by two methods: Archimedes’ Principle and density definition. Theory: According to the Archimedes’ principle the buoyant force acting on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object which is given by the equation: B = WL = mLg = ρLVOg Where B is the force of buoyancy; WL and mL, are the weight and mass of displaced fluid, respectively; ρL is the density of the fluid; VO is the volume of the fluid displaced by the submerged object, which is actually equal to the volume of the part of the object that is submerged in the fluid; and g is the acceleration due to Earth’s gravity. Since density is the mass per unit volume of a substance, the mass of the object is equal to its density multiplied by its volume, so the weight is given by: W = mg = ρOVO [Show More]
