Engineering > Class Notes > rock formation and crude oil. (All)
hundreds of millions of years ago. When the plankton died, they sank to the bottom of the sea and slowly got buried by sand and mud. As time progressed i.e. over millions of years, these dead animals... and plants got buried deeper and deeper. The heat and pressure gradually turned the mud into rock and the dead animals and plants into oil and gas. There are three main types of rocks that make up the Earth’s crust: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are crystalline solids which form directly from the cooling of magma.....There are three (3) main basic geological features or parameters that control the occurrence of petroleum: Source Rocks, Reservoir Rocks and Traps. Petroleum generation takes place in source rocks, which is a layer of sedimentation deposited with abundant organics, primarily very small plants and animals. The most important factor in the generation of petroleum in source rock is temperature. Over millions of years, with heat and pressure the dead pants and animals are converted to oil and gas. The non-hydrocarbon organic matter (kerogen) is the major source of oil and gas deposit. So, how is kerogen converted to oil and gas? Anaerobic bacteria convert lipids [Show More]
