Persuasive Speech Outline
Topic: Should Elders over age 65 be allowed to drive?
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to acknowledge the fact that not
all elderly people are bad drivers, as everyone thinks they are.
Thesis Statement: Nobody should ever feel that they are too old to
successfully accomplish a task or a skill.
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Attention material/Credibility Material: How many times have you heard
“old people can’t drive! They are too slow!” Many people in our society today
seem to think that with age, the necessary skills needed for driving tends to
fade away. This is not true with all the elderly. Most elderly people are still
capable of driving skillfully and safely. I believe that there should be a protocol
pertaining to assessing the skills needed to continue driving. I’ve worked with
Elderly people in the past and majority of them were still capable of driving
well.
B. Tie to the audience: Imagine if a grandparent of yours was told that they
could no longer drive based on their age being over 65. They are perfectly
capable of driving and you’ve seen them drive before and are aware that they
can drive well. Wouldn’t it be devastating to witness the disappointment they
would feel?
C. Thesis and Preview: Today I’d like to talk to you about first, the stigma of
elderly drivers, second, how important it is to determine when Elders are no
longer safe on the road and lastly I will discuss how everyone ages differently,
therefore they should not be penalized or discriminated agains
