In the career we are in as educators we are in the people business. We are here to serve students and their families. As our roles as teachers we are responsible in many ways for the student. Being an effective teacher has so many layers that build an effective teacher. The layer I would emphasis the most is classroom management. Having control of your classroom is essential, especially in the upper grade levels such as junior high and high school. Create a good foundation that is built on your expectations of your students, the rules they need to abide, and the fundamental procedures that will run your classroom. If you want students to have a procedure to come into the classroom, get out their work, and get started on the warm up then they need to be taught exactly how and what you want from them. Give examples, be consistent, and be patient. It’s my belief that once the teacher has his or her classroom under control then the learning and the relationship building can begin.
