A ... n estimated 60% to 80% of all dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer's dementia is a progressive disease, with symptoms gradually worsening over a number of years. Initially, mild memory loss occurs, but in the final stage the person loses ability to respond to others or the environment and leads to death. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States (CDC, 2017). Extracellular amyloid plaques, intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and neuronal death synaptic deterioration, occurs with Alzheimer’s disease. Risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease include head injury, hypertension, genetics, obesity, older age, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and type 2 diabetes (Falkner & Green, 2018). On average, persons with Alzheimer’s disease live 8 years after diagnosis, but the range is from 4 to 20 years (Alzheimer's Association, n.d.). For diseases such as Alzheimer’s, research has found that keeping the brain active with activities such as reading may be key to decreasing risk. Proper diet, physical activity, and adequate sleep also play an essential role in decreasing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. [Show More]
