The components of the bones are compact bone, spongy bone, bone marrow, blood vessels, and, nerves. The skeletal bones are vital in hematopoiesis, which is the production of blood cells. Alterations in the musculoskeletal system can be due to injury, infection, inflammatory diseases, non-inflammatory conditions, or tumors. Bone loss and muscle atrophy are associated with the aging process and prolonged bedrest. Pain may be the first sign of a musculoskeletal system problem.
