PSYC 304 Week 4 Midterm Essay Exam. American Public University.1. Describe the process of perception as a series of steps, beginning with the environmental stimulus and culminating in the behavioral responses of perceiving, recognizing, and acting.
There is a process of steps that are involved in perception. The first step is environmental stimulus. Environmental stimuli are the events that happen in the environment around us that our sense recognize and respond to. This response can either be consciously or unconsciously. What happens in environmental stimulus is a person sees a tree. Next, the responses created by the stimuli are changed between the environmental stimuli and the perception. Finally, the light is reflected on the retina from that tree and that light is then transformed into upside down image on our retina. The second step is transduction.
Transduction is the transformation of an environmental stimuli into some other form such as electrical energy, which are nerve impulses to the cones and the rods. The third step is neural process. The neural process is the changes that happen when any signals are moved through neurons. These are primarily collected in the temporal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the parietal lobe. The fourth and final step is behavioral responses. There are basically three steps within behavioral responses. Those are: (1) seeing something, (2) recognition, and (3) Action: happens when perceiver starts motor activity.
2. Because the long axons of neurons look like electrical wires, and both neurons and electrical wires conduct electricity, is tempting to equate the two. Compare and contrast the functioning of axons and electrical wires in terms of their structure and the nature of the electrical signals they conduct.
The functioning axon is the part of a nevre cell which sends impulses from a nerve cell to another nerve cell. This is done in some similar ways in which electrical impulses are sent through a wire. Compared to a wire, if an axon is broken or if it torn, the actual nerve impulses cannot, and will not, be transmitted.
Also, much like a wore, the axon can have insolation. If this insolation is damaged or harmed, it can result in serious damage to issues with the nerve cells. A great example of this would-be radio cord.
